Genk (The Brussels Morning Newspaper): Kamil Bouzoubaa-Grivel, a Parisian artist now in Genk, created metal artworks inspired by local mine buildings. His exhibition, “Yesterday, when There Were No Jokes Left to Tell,” opens October 26, featuring pieces with a jester theme, including a hanging female jester by Julie Béna.
Kamil Bouzoubaa-Grivel is a Parisian artist living in Genk for three months. He created a metal artwork that fits well with the surrounding area, especially the old mine buildings. To better understand Genk, he has made an effort to connect with local neighbors and shopkeepers and he visits the market every weekend.
What artistic themes are explored in Kamil Bouzoubaa-Grivel’s exhibition?
The artworks for the exhibition were created in studios next to the exhibition space, which is located near the Winterslag mine buildings. Artist Kamil Bouzoubaa enjoyed the peaceful, green surroundings while working. He collaborated with Prague-based artist Julie Béna to create pieces inspired by the theme of the jester. Kamil focused on making drawings and a metal statue, while Julie created sculptures from wood and metal.
The exhibition ‘Yesterday, when there were no jokes left to tell’ features a court jester theme. In the center, a female jester by Julie Béna hangs upside down from a rope, with a rat on her leg. Koi Perseyn, the artistic director, explains that the jester uses humor to point out problems in society. At the opening on Saturday, visitors can also see the artists’ studios, which include spaces for different types of art. The exhibition will be open from October 26 to January 19, Wednesday to Sunday, from 1 to 6 pm.
