Richard PONCIN Administrator of asbl Tapis de Fleurs de Bruxelles /vzw Bloementapijt van Brussels, said to Brussels morning, in the beginning it was a publicity for the flowers. So, the Grand-Place in Brussels is considered the most beautiful square in the world, and the ideal place to promote flowers. This is how the Tapis de Fleurs adventure began, now with the support of 86 members of the ASBL, who launched the project. Originally, the idea was to highlight the large number of begonias grown in Belgium. Unfortunately, today, there are no more begonias here, he said.

Poncin mentioned: the flower carpet, made up of flowers that remain fresh for a maximum of 4 days, requires 2 days of preparation, including floor design and colour references. Installing with nearly 1 million flowers in less than 6 hours, mobilizes 120 volunteers. The Fleur carpet de Brussels association decides each year on the motif to be created, so for visitors who want to see this carpet of flowers on the balcony of Brussels City Hall, we sell around 20,500 tickets.

He said for the first time in the event’s history, the carpet will predominantly feature dahlias, a flower known for its resilience and stunning variety of colors. Over 80% of the 1,680 m² the largest carpet in the world will be made up of dahlias, covering an impressive 1,300 m². These flowers, all cultivated in Belgium, will add a fresh and dynamic energy to the display. The use of dahlias marks a departure from previous editions, where begonias were the flower of choice. The switch to dahlias not only rejuvenates the event but also aligns with the organizers’ goal of reaching a broader audience while still captivating long-time admirers.

In a press release sent to Brussels Morning journalist by press team of Flowers carpet, mentioned: The centerpiece of this year’s Carpet of Flowers is a unique design by Océane Cornille, a talented street artist from Liège who goes by the pseudonym ‘Whoups’. After studying graphic design at the prestigious École Supérieure des Arts de Saint-Luc, Cornille developed a signature style that merges the natural world with urban landscapes. Her design, titled “Rhizome,” is deeply symbolic, reflecting the intricate and interconnected nature of Brussels itself.

“In my artistic approach, I draw inspiration from the concept of the plant rhizome to express the complexity and interconnectedness of Brussels,” Cornille explains. “The lines in my work represent the rhizome of plants, but are also a metaphor for the urban rhizome, where neighborhoods converge and diverge in a complex and dynamic network. Like the roots of a plant, these lines intersect and overlap, creating a dense, organic network that mirrors the diversity and vitality of Brussels.” Added in the press release.

Cornille’s design pays homage to Brussels not only as the floral capital of Europe but also as a cradle of Art Nouveau and the birthplace of Surrealism. Her work reflects the city’s rich artistic heritage while also looking to the future, making this year’s Carpet of Flowers a true celebration of Brussels’ cultural identity.

The other part of press release said the Carpet of Flowers is more than just a visual feast; it is a cultural event that resonates deeply with both locals and visitors. Each edition of the carpet has been tied to a significant cultural theme, a guest country of honor, or a notable anniversary. This year, the “Rhizome” design stands out as a unique creation, crafted specifically for the Grand-Place and reflecting the spirit of Brussels in all its complexity and beauty.

The 2024 Brussels Flower Carpet is set to be a spectacular event that not only showcases the beauty of flowers but also highlights the city’s rich cultural tapestry, making it a must-see attraction for locals and tourists alike.
