Hasselt (The Brussels Morning newspaper): The Quarter Canal in Hasselt Belgium is being transformed into a vibrant creative district with the construction of Korn 16 a 16-story building inspired by Danish architecture, offering workspaces and short-stay living for creative professionals.

The Quartier Canal area in Hasselt used to be kinda rundown but now they’re turning it into a new city district. They’re making progress with plans to build student housing a tower for researchers and creatives and now they’re even working on a huge 16-story building called ‘Korn 16’. The whole project is being handled by Imaximus who’s already in Kaai 16. They’re revamping an old flour mill into workspaces and now building ‘Korn 16’ to continue the grain theme. The name ‘Korn’ means grain in Danish and the design is inspired by Denmark with the new building standing on legs like a silo.

What features will the public balcony at Korn 16 offer?

Peter Hinoul the project manager mentioned that at the highest point of the buildin, there will be a public city balcony. This balcony will be open to everyone where they can enjoy a drink or a meal. The view from this balcony will be amazing as you’ll be able to see all around you in 360 degrees. It’s going to be a fantastic spot for people to relax and take in the surroundings while enjoying some food or drinks. In Kaai 16 and soon in Korn 16 they’re gonna have spaces for creative folks and businesses. The building will look sleek with a mix of glass, concrete and steel. Inside there will be spots for creative companies to rent or buy. They’re aiming at app developers, entrepreneurs, artist, and more. They’re also setting up 80 short-stay living and working spaces for a max of three years.

How is Korn 16 enhancing cycling accessibility in Hasselt?

In Kaai 16 and soon in Korn 16 bikes are the stars. They’re setting up big lifts for bikes to go up to the flats so owners can keep their fancy bikes safe. There’s a bike repair spot on the south side. It’s not just for residents but also for tourists on the cycle route. There will still be parking for cars.

“The name Korn 16 refers to the Danish word for grain. And we also got the inspiration for the building from Denmark: the new building will be on legs like a silo”

Peter Hinoul, project manager

The city and the planners are teaming up to revamp the industrial area into a district called ‘Kanal Kwartier’. They’ve been working hard to breathe new life into this spot after slow progress. The city council sees this as a key project to make Hasselt shine even more. They want this area to be buzzing and unique. They’re getting feedback until early August and if all goes well, construction should start in mid-2025. They’re looking at a two-year timeline for building. They’re already in talks with creative folks to make this place a hub of creativity.
