Hasselt (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – Jessa Hospital is building a cleanroom in the HUB at Salvator Plus for new 2026 medicine rules. Construction starts in 2026 and finishes in 2029. “Ons Zorgpark” will open in 2034.

Jessa Hospital is building a special room. It’s called a clean room. It will help them make medicine. They are doing this because new rules about how medicine should be made are coming in 2026. The cleanroom will be ready by 2029. They are working with other hospitals to make sure they can still make medicine safely. Until then, they are making their current cleanroom better.

“The current infrastructure of the Jessa pharmacy does not meet this standard,”

Says general manager Yves Breysem.

“That is why Jessa is now moving up a gear by bringing forward the construction of the HUB by a few years. This will allow us to put it into use by 2029.”

Will Hasselt’s Jessa Hospital complete HUB and Zorgpark on time?

Jessa Hospital looked at different places to build the new cleanroom. But they found that building it somewhere else would cost a lot more money. So, they decided to build it at the Salvator Plus site, which is where they are building a new healthcare park.

They want to make sure the cleanroom is ready when they need it, so they are building it quickly. The cleanroom will be in a separate building called the “HUB”. The HUB will be used for making medicine. They will connect the HUB to the main hospital with a tunnel and a bridge so they can easily move medicine between the 2 buildings.

“We investigated whether it would be organizationally and financially viable to build the cleanroom elsewhere,”

Says Breysem.

The HUB will be the first building built in the new healthcare park. It will be next to the tall tower. According to officials, this is a big step for the new healthcare park, which is called “Ons Zorgpark.” This is the first part of the new healthcare park, and they said that Jessa Hospital wants to provide high-quality medicine and build a modern healthcare system for the future.

“The board of directors has, after positive advice from the medical council, given the green light for the next step: the preparation of an implementation design,”

Says Karin Genoe, the new chair of the board of directors.

The new healthcare park, “Ons Zorgpark,” is facing some delays. The project is taking longer than expected. According to officials, there are 2  main reasons for the delays. First, they had to do more studies. They wanted to see if they could build the park in smaller parts instead of all at once. But the studies showed that would be more expensive. So, they decided to build it all at once. Second, they still need to get all the money for the project. This is a big project, so they need to talk to the government, banks, and other healthcare groups to get the money.

“We hope to open the entire healthcare campus by 2034.”

Director Yves Breysem

The new healthcare park, “Ons Zorgpark,” is going to be finished later than expected. They wanted it to be open in 2031, but now they think it won’t be ready until 2034. The hospital still wants to build a really good healthcare centre in Hasselt. They are going to keep working on other parts of the hospital, like the HUB and the cleanroom, while they wait for the whole park to be finished.

“Additional studies were done to see if we could do the construction in phases, but that turned out to be more expensive,”

Says Breysem.

“The discussions about financing are also still ongoing, which has pushed everything back a bit. We hope to be able to open the entire care campus by 2034.”
