Ghent (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – In Ghent, about 80 people watched the French film L’Atalante from boats on the water, as Bergiebrug quay was transformed into an outdoor cinema for the Openbare Werken city festival.

As VRT News reported, on Friday, May 16, 2025, Ciné Rio showed “L’Atalante,” a well-known black and white movie from 1934, during the festival. About 80 people watched the film while floating in inflatable boats, some of which were provided by the organisers and others that the viewers brought themselves. Another 200 people watched from the shore.

How did Ghent’s floating cinema and openbare werken festival create a cultural experience?

At the floating cinema event, Josephine mentioned that she wasn’t familiar with the film but was anticipating a pleasant experience. The organisers had arranged for small aperitif packages to be distributed before the screening.

Despite some initial concerns about the cold, especially since the movie was being watched while floating on the water, Josephine was well-prepared. She had brought along a thick coat and a warm blanket, ensuring she would be comfortable.

Unlike Josephine, not everyone came prepared. Jens and his girlfriend, who were on a date, wished for sunshine to keep them warm. The event organisers provided blankets. Besides the floating cinema, a summer terrace was set up on the quays. There, people enjoyed live music and looked at stalls with drinks and snacks.

Janne Quintelier, from Ciné Rio, a small cinema in Ghent, explained they had wanted to host a “drive-in” movie event for quite some time. The idea was initially planned shortly after the peak of the coronavirus pandemic, but it was postponed due to concerns about large gatherings.

However, when the city’s Openbare Werken festival presented an opportunity, Ciné Rio saw the perfect moment. They decided to create a floating cinema experience instead of using traditional cars.

Tonight, May 17, 2025, the Openbare Werken festival in Ghent will show the movie “FLOW.” The director is Gints Zilbalodis from Latvia. “FLOW” is a visually striking film with little dialogue. As part of the festival’s program, “FLOW” adds to the cultural events for people in Ghent.

The Openbare Werken festival is happening until Sunday, May 18, 2025. It includes many performances, walks, and art exhibitions in different parts of Ghent. If people need information or help, visit Bar Edward on Anseeleplein. They have schedules and maps. People can find out about all the events there.
