Gentbrugge (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – The 6 IVAGO recycling parks located in Ghent and Destelbergen remain closed this weekend because of union labor action. Twenty people, comprising 50% of the park rangers, joined an International Women’s Day action.

The 6 IVAGO recycling parks found in both Ghent and Destelbergen will be closed throughout the weekend because organised labour is using their International Women’s Day action to conduct their strike. The staff participation of 10 out of 20 park rangers in the strike forces IVAGO to temporarily shut down its recycling parks as a preventive measure against operational challenges. Staff closures have been ordered since weather forecasts predict sunny conditions, which normally bring out more visitors during cleaning activities.

The KMI predicts a beautiful and sunny weekend. People who are thinking about spring cleaning in Ghent will not be able to go to the recycling parks in the city tomorrow.

“In Ghent and Destelbergen, the 6 recycling parks will remain closed,”

Says Sandra Deneef of waste management company IVAGO.

“Tomorrow, there will be an action in the context of International Women’s Rights Day. We have listened in advance to see if employees would like to participate. Half of the 20 park rangers say they will not come to work. Now that the weather is also getting nice, we have decided to keep the parks closed as a precaution. The normal opening hours will apply again starting Monday,”

IVAGO also announced.

What is the significance of recycling parks and their role in Ghent and Destelbergen?

Residents in Ghent and Destelbergen use recycling parks to properly dispose of waste materials that are both recyclable and non-recyclable through these container parks. The six container parks managed by IVAGO in Ghent and Destelbergen serve as fundamental facilities for waste management and sustainability goals. The waste processing capacity of IVAGO’s parks extends across thousands of tons each year and leads to a substantial amount of recycling that supports the municipality’s environmental targets.

Six recycling centres located in both Ghent and Destelbergen see their peak activity on weekends throughout the spring months as local residents conduct their annual spring cleanup activities. KMI forecasted sunny weather this weekend would usually drive up park visitor numbers. Operations face disruption since 50% of the 20 park rangers joined the union action.
