The new container terminal at the old Ford factory in Genk is nearly ready and will open in February 2025. It will handle 350,000 containers annually from big ports like Antwerp and Rotterdam. While this will help the city grow, there are concerns about crime, as some criminals might move to smaller ports like Port of Limburg. To keep things safe, the port plans to have a tall fence, 80 cameras, daily drone checks, and a new security system to manage containers.
What security measures are being implemented at the Port of Limburg with SCR?
“We want our chain to be safe,” says Benjamin Hermans, the head of Port of Limburg. They are using new software called Secure Container Release (SCR) from T-mining. This software replaces PIN codes with secure tokens to check if a driver can pick up a container. This way, only the right driver can take it, helping to reduce crime at the port. T-mining has also worked with the port of Antwerp for many years.
“To identify drivers, we are using the app itsme,” says the CEO. “We looked at options like Alfapass in Antwerp and CargoCard in Rotterdam, but we didn’t want too many new passes. So, we chose a simple system that can work at other terminals too.” He adds, “We are the first inland port in the Benelux to use SCR, setting a new security standard and aiming to lead the way.”
