Genk (Brussels Morning) – Genk city is introducing 18 “hoppin points” with buses, bikes and shared cars to improve transportation options with the first 7 points launching in January 2025.

Genk city is putting in 18 new hoppin points to help people around the city quickly. These points will have buses, bikes and shared cars all in one spot. The whole project costs 500,000 euros with Flanders chipping in 350,000 euros. The idea is to give folks options besides just driving like biking, taking the bus or sharing a ride. They want all these ways of getting around to work well together and that’s where the hoppin points come in handy.

What’s the Plan for Genk’s Hoppin Points: Improving Neighborhood Connectivity?

Kriekemans is really working on improving the neighborhoods. He mentioned how residents often talk about the importance of staying well connected. These hoppin points with different transport options will be like central hubs. People can easily hop from one part of the city to another starting from there.

He also said that a good bus connection is key for these hoppin points. They’re following De Lin’s plan to make sure buses run efficiently. Once you hop off the bus in a neighborhood you can grab a shared bike to move around easily. The hoppin points will have big colorful columns a mix of ways to get around like bikes and buses and even lockers for packages. They’ll make sure there’s a place to park your bike catch a bus or train share a car or bike charge up your electric ride and store your stuff. Each hoppin point will have a bus stop with a shelter, wide and raised platforms for wheelchair users special tiles for the blind to navigate easily and parking spaces for people with disabilities.

The city council is starting phase 1 in January 2025 by putting in the first 7 out of 18 hoppin points. They’re mostly changing existing bus stops but they’re making new ones in Boxberg and at LABIOMISTA. Here are the spots chosen so far by the church in Boxberg on Landwaartslaan, close to the intersection of Collegelaan and Weg naar As, at the Park & Ride of the Limburghal on Jaarbeursslaan 6, at the SportinGenkark on Emiel Van Dorenlaan 144, by the church in Sledderlo near Trichterweg, in Spoorwegstraat in Winterslag near Noordlaan, and at LABIOMISTA in Zwartberg on Marcel Habetslaan 60.

The council is still finding spots for more hoppin points because things are changing in those areas. They plan to start phase 2 at Thor park next year.
