Tervuren (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – Construction of the FR20 cycle highway and Mechelsesteenweg renovation will start in March 2026, featuring 3 cycle bridges, connecting Tervuren to the airport, aiming for completion in 2028, says Marijn Struyf.
As VRT News reported, construction of the first section of the FR20 cycle highway will begin in March 2026. The project aims to improve cycling routes around the Brussels Ring Road.
“The cycle highway connects Tervuren directly to the airport and connects to other major cycling routes, such as the F29 and the F203 towards Brussels, Leuven, and Wezembeek-Oppem,”
says Marijn Struyf of De Werkvennootschap.
“This makes cycling a smooth and attractive alternative for those who commute daily to and from the south and east of the Brussels Ring Road.”
When will the FR20 cycle highway and Mechelsesteenweg upgrade in Tervuren be completed?
The FR20 will feature 3 new cycle bridges. These bridges will fully separate bicycles from car traffic. Planners say this will improve safety and allow cyclists to move without interruptions. The route will also have modern pavement, clear signs, and lighting, making it usable day and night. Experts call the project a major step for sustainable travel in the city.
“A large steel cycle bridge will be built over Wezembeeklaan. Cycle and pedestrian bridges will also be built over Oscar de Burburelaan and at Alfons Lenaertsstraat and Kerkhoflaan. The bridges are designed to minimise height differences and allow cyclists to cycle comfortably,”
explains Struyf.
The Mechelsesteenweg will be fully renovated between the Vierarmenkruispunt and Varenslaan as part of the FR20 cycle highway project. The work will include new road surfaces, clear signage, and improved lighting. The renovation is coordinated with the construction of the FR20 cycle highway.
Construction will start in March 2026 in Tervuren and Kraainem. The work will continue in phases towards Zaventem to reduce disruption for traffic and local businesses. Authorities say access for public transport and emergency services will be maintained at all times. If the schedule is followed, the renovation is expected to be completed in 2028.
As part of a bigger plan to create better cycling connections around the Brussels Ring Road, the FR20 Cycle Highway was announced in 2024 as a way to reduce traffic and provide greener means of transportation. It is the newest of many major cycling initiatives in the Brussels area.
The F1 and F2 cycle highways and their associated bridges improved connections between Brussels and nearby communities, and a recent renovation to the F3/F203 and Mechelen-Brussels cycle routes created more safety for cyclists and more efficient connections between important towns.
