Hasselt (Brussels Morning Newspaper): Emergency services responded to a fire at a mixed-use building on Kempische Steenweg, Hasselt, evacuating 22 residents. Two individuals required hospitalization for smoke inhalation. The cause remains unknown, and investigations are ongoing.

The Southwest Limburg Emergency Services Zone was called to a fire in a building on Kempische Steenweg after 6 p.m. on 8 December. The fire broke out in a mixed-use building with a game store on the ground floor and apartments above. Authorities mentioned that this made the situation more complicated because the fire was dangerous for both the store and the people living there. Firefighters quickly arrived to assess the situation and started struggling to stop the fire.

What caused the fire on Kempische Steenweg in Hasselt?

The fire department reported that when they received the first call, there were already flames in the building, which led to a quick emergency response. Because people were living there, they were worried about their safety, and evacuation procedures were started.

When the fire department arrived, most residents had already left the building. They evacuated 22 people, two of whom were taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation. Two studios in the building were destroyed: one where the fire started and the one below it, which was damaged by water. The cause of the fire is still unknown. The police briefly closed the street between the Grote Ring and the Kleine Ring, but it has reopened.
