Brussels (The Brussels Morning Newspaper) – Balazs Gyorffy, a Fidesz MEP, quit after a drunken brawl with a woman turned violent. He relinquished from all government posts and the party, asserting responsibility for the incident.

Why Did Balazs Gyorffy Resign from Fidesz?

Member of the European Parliament from Viktor Orban’s party “Fidesz” Balazs Gyorffy resigned after a drunken fight with a woman, during which he was fierce. Gyorffy announced that he was quitting all government posts, including being president of the Hungarian Chamber of Agriculture, which he had been steering since 2013, and the Fidesz party, led by Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban.

Gyorffy said: “I accept full responsibility and the consequences. Last night I got into a drunken argument with a lady and to my greatest regret, the argument turned violent. Although I unfortunately do not remember what happened, my behaviour is unacceptable.”

He contended that he no longer has a position in public life and will accept any legal outcomes of his actions.

How Did Fidesz React to Gyorff’ys Actions?

The Fidesz party stated that anyone who “violates the rules and values cannot be a constituent of our community. “Balazs Gyorffy, a representative of the European Parliament, got into a drunken argument with a lady and the argument turned violent. There is no excuse for Balazs Gyorffy’s behaviour, which is so irresponsible and unacceptable, he should leave our community immediately.” the party statement said.

How Did the Public and Media React to the Incident?

According to local media, Gyorffy conferred with a woman during a nightclub party, causing a fight to break out and police to reach the scene. Context Fidesz prides itself on encouraging so-called ‘traditional’ Christian values, including family values.

This is not the first time a Fidesz MEP has been compelled to resign over misconduct.

At the height of the coronavirus pandemic, MEP Jozsef Szajer quit his post after he was caught by police while observing a gay sex party in Brussels, a violation of seclusion.

Prosecutors expressed they found drugs in his backpack as he tried to flee by climbing down a drainpipe. This behaviour was not in line with the party line – Fidesz has been blamed for years for its hostile policies towards the LGBTIQ+ community. The far-right group in the European Parliament, which includes the Hungarian Fidesz party, has become the third biggest political force. In the last parliamentary elections, it was hooked by the French far-right.
