Brussels (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – Kaja Kallas emphasized support for Syrians, urged dialogue, protection of minorities, and an inclusive, peaceful transition.

European Union’s High Representative Kaja Kallas reportedly stated that the fall of Assad’s regime marks a historic moment for the Syrian people, who have shown great resilience in their pursuit of dignity, freedom, and justice. She expressed sympathy for the victims of the regime and those affected by the Syrian conflict, adding that all Syrians should now have the opportunity to learn the truth about the fate of their loved ones.

Further, she was reported to have said, “Today we stand with all Syrians, both in the country and in the diaspora, who are full of hope, but also those who fear an uncertain future. All must have an opportunity to reunify, stabilize, and rebuild their country, restore justice, and ensure accountability.”

She urged all actors to avoid further violence, ensure the protection of civilians, and uphold international law, including international humanitarian law. She particularly called for the protection of minority groups, including Christians and other non-majority confessions, as well as the safety of foreign nationals and the respect of diplomatic representations in Damascus. Additionally, she urged all parties to protect Syria’s rich cultural heritage and religious monuments.

In conclusion, she stated that now, more than ever, it is crucial for all stakeholders to engage in an inclusive, Syrian-led, and Syrian-owned dialogue on all key issues to ensure an orderly, peaceful, and inclusive transition, in line with the UN Security Council Resolution 2254 and the will of the Syrian people. She emphasized strong support for the ongoing work of the UN Special Envoy for Syria, Geir Pedersen, through all relevant EU instruments. She also affirmed that during this critical period, the European Union stands with the Syrian people and maintains close contact with regional and key international partners.
