Strasbourg (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – The EU Parliament criticises China’s persistent military provocations against Taiwan and firmly denies any unilateral modification to the status quo in the Taiwan Strait.

How does the EU Parliament view military provocations in Taiwan?

MEPs expressed that the attempts, particularly utilizing force or coercion, will not be tolerated and will incur a decisive and firm response. In a resolution adopted, they criticise China’s unnecessary military exercises of 14 October and continued military provocations against Taiwan, emphasising that the military build-up alters the power balance in the Indo-Pacific.

EU Parliament strongly repudiated China’s endeavours to warp history and international laws and underlined that UN resolution 2758 does not take a position on Taiwan. It counters China’s constant struggles to block Taiwan’s participation in multilateral organisations and urges the EU and its member states to sustain Taiwan’s meaningful participation in international organisations such as the World Health Organization, the International Civil Aviation Organization, the International Criminal Police Organization (Interpol), and the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change. MEPs also demand the UN to grant Taiwanese nationals and journalists the privilege to access its premises.

Moreover, the resolution stated that the EU remains committed to its ‘One China’ policy as the political basis of EU-China relations, backing initiatives that foster dialogue and confidence-building, highlights the text.

MEPs also strongly condemned statements by the Chinese President that the People’s Republic of China will never relinquish the right to use force for Taiwan, urging that using coercive measures to accomplish unification contradicts international law. They emphasised that only Taiwan’s democratically elected administration can represent the Taiwanese people internationally and voice their concern over China’s use of malicious disinformation to damage trust in Taiwan’s democracy and governance.

What concerns arise from China-Russia military cooperation?

Furthermore, MEPs stated that China’s increasingly aggressive conduct, especially in its own neighbourhood, such as the Taiwan Strait and the South China Sea, presents a risk to regional and global security. Parliament also voiced worries about China and Russia’s renewed commitment to further boost their military ties, criticising the Chinese supply of equipment to Moscow.
