EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell begins Middle East tour

Amman (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell reached Jordan to discuss regional issues, and sustainable peace efforts in Gaza and Lebanon.

Jordan’s King Abdullah, accompanied by His Crown Prince Al Hussein bin Abdullah II, received High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borell. The meeting covered the cooperation between Jordan and the EU and the means of supporting it in various fields, as well as current regional developments. The meeting, observed by Crown Prince Al Hussein bin Abdullah II, focused on bolstering Jordan-EU relations, with King Abdullah expressing gratitude for Borrell’s actions.

What is the focus of Borrell’s Middle East visit?

The EU foreign policy chief is visiting the Middle East this week and has several sessions, including with Lebanese and Palestinian leaders. Josep Borrell will also travel to Cyprus and Lebanon as part of his Middle East visit from Nov. 20 – 24 to consult with partners in the region about a possible way forward toward endurable cease-fires in the Gaza Strip and Lebanon, and a longer-term process based on a two-state solution, according to the statement from his office.

Who will Borrell meet during his visit to Jordan?

On Thursday 21, he will have a meeting with Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Jordan Ayman Safadi. The conference will be followed by a joint press conference. The HR/VP will also meet with Palestinian leaders. On Friday 22, the High Representative will travel to Cyprus, where he will deliver a keynote speech at an event of the Two-State Coalition for Israel/Palestine with civil society from both nations on Saturday.

On Sunday 24, he will travel to Lebanon to hold several bilateral discussions, including with Prime Minister Najib Mikati, Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri, Lebanese Armed Force Commander Josef Aoun, and representatives of the United Nations in the country.

In the background of the disastrous situation in Gaza and the military escalation in Lebanon, the trip will be an occasion to continue to consult with partners in the region about a possible way forward towards a sustainable truce in Gaza and Lebanon, and a longer-term process established on the Two-State solution.
