EU Commission reveals action plan to boost hospital cybersecurity

Brussels (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – An action plan by the European Commission was issued to improve hospitals’ and healthcare providers’ cybersecurity.  

The plan brings, inter alia, to the agenda that ENISA-the EU agency for cybersecurity, establish a pan-European Cybersecurity Support Centre, which should help hospitals and healthcare providers with focused information, services, tools, and training. The endeavor builds on the broader EU framework to support cybersecurity across the crucial infrastructure.

The proposed plan allows to development of the healthcare sector’s capacities to control cybersecurity happenings via enhanced preparedness efforts such as guidance on executing critical cybersecurity practices. The Cybersecurity Support Centre for hospitals and healthcare providers will create an EU-wide early caution service, providing near-real-time attention to potential cyber dangers, by 2026.

The plan also presents a rapid reaction service for the health sector under the EU Cybersecurity Reserve. Launched in the Cyber Solidarity Act, the Reserve supplies happening response assistance from trusted private service providers. Moreover, it Protects European healthcare procedures by preventing cyber threat players from attacking them. 

What steps is the EU taking to modernize healthcare delivery?

The EU Commission has implemented a number of initiatives to improve the European health infrastructure, including setting up the Health Emergency Preparedness and Response Authority HERA for the development of medical countermeasures and their release.

Setting it up also resulted in the creation of EHDS, or the European Health Data Space, meant to provide a safe space for data sharing on research and healthcare. Health systems transformed to improve delivery in this modern age were transformed through this means, coupled with investing in digital health technologies for improved accessibility and efficiency as well as health literacy for empowerment in informed decisions by citizens about health.

These are but a few steps the EU Commission has taken towards improving European health infrastructure. The Commission remains dedicated to further working in this field to ensure all Europeans have quality, affordable health care.
