Brussels (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – The EU Commission has asked Apple to ensure iPadOS complies with all relevant obligations under the Digital Markets Act (DMA).
Apple must ensure its operating system iPadOS concedes with all the relevant commitments under the Digital Markets Act (DMA). In April 2024, the Commission counted Apple’s iPadOS to the list of core platform services for which Apple is designated as gatekeeper.
What are the key requirements for iPadOS compliance?
According to the EU Commission, Apple must, among others, permit users to set the default web browser of their choosing on iPadOS, allow alternative app stores on its operating system, and authorise accessory devices, like headphones and smart pens, to effectively access iPadOS features. On 1 November, Apple also issued a compliance report detailing the actions it has taken for iPadOS to concede with the DMA.
As reported by the Commission, it will now carefully evaluate whether the measures adopted for iPadOS are effective in conceding with the DMA obligations. The Commission’s examination will also be based on the input of interested stakeholders. If the Commission finds that Apple’s solutions are not obedient with the DMA, the Commission will take formal enforcement measures as foreseen in the DMA.
