Brussels (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – The European Commission unveiled new package of aid for Gaza. It amounts to €120 million.
The European Commission said that the package will comprise food assistance to tackle critical food insecurity and malnutrition. It contains Healthcare assistance to sustain the functioning of healthcare installations and provide medical supplies. It also includes the Water, hygiene and sanitation support to permit access to sanitation and water services. It comprises shelter grants to provide safe and secure housing for those who have been displaced.
In her remarks, President Ursula von der Leyen stated:
“The ceasefire and hostage release agreement offers hope the region desperately needed. But the humanitarian situation remains grim in Gaza. Europe will channel €120 million of aid in 2025, alongside tons of in-kind aid, to keep supporting Palestinians.”
How has the EU increased its humanitarian support for Gaza?
The European Union increased humanitarian assistance to more than three times the Palestinian territories. In 2023, the EU already promised €28 million in humanitarian aid to Palestinians. However, due to the emergency needs that came out after the conflict, on October 14, 2023, the commitment was increased threefold to €75 million. This aid intends to tackle needs such as the security of food, health, and other general necessities that displace the Gazan population.
Besides providing an immediate response to the humanitarian crisis, the EU has engaged in a commitment to continue supporting the situation until 2024. The European Commission has disbursed over €193 million in humanitarian aid to vulnerable Palestinians, with further top-ups being sent for approval.
