Tonight we find out whether the Biomedical Laboratory Engineering students of the Erasmus University College Brussels can beat their Law opponent of the KU Leuven. Just yesterday, the biomedical lab technicians competed against the bio-engineers of Ghent University in a super exciting semi-final. “We had hoped for this, but not at all expected it,” says student lab technician Joachim Van Kerrebroeck.

In The Campus Cup, students from all Brussels and Flemish colleges and universities compete against each other. Last year, the VUB Applied Linguistics students won the television quiz on VRT 1. Whether the final cup will remain in Brussels for a while, all depends on student laboratory assistants Wout, Lisa, Rana and Joachim. Yesterday the semi-final gave them a score of 6 against 3. It was thanks to their exemptions and fast response times that they were able to eliminate the very strong team of Ghent University.

If the biomedical lab technicians can again crown themselves as winners tonight, it would be the first scientific direction ever to win The Campus Cup. Rana Petre is satisfied with her place in the final, whether they win or not: “I was always stressed about being out, but after the final it was done for both teams and we played all episodes. That in itself is already an achievement and therefore causes me less stress.”

The biomedical lab technicians enter the final with a feeling of pride. “How we got to the final is really nice. It couldn’t have been better. Moreover, I have made new friends,” continues Petre. Joachim Van Kerrebroeck also agrees that the competition creates a bond: “I only saw my fellow students for the first time an hour before the first qualifying round, but it is really special to get to know them shoulder to shoulder.”

Tonight at 9.35 pm we will find out whether a Brussels school can again take the honours. . “It was a great adventure and I would do it again in a heartbeat”, says Joachim Van Kerrebroeck. “Nevertheless, the adventure also caused stress. The fact that the whole of Belgium was watching from the couch reinforces that feeling. Especially now that the exams are just around the corner.”
