Bruges (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – Bruges grants environmental permit for a new fire station at Waggelwater industrial estate, with construction scheduled to begin in September 2025.

The two fire stations that are still in operation will be replaced by the new structure. Given its proximity to the ring road, the new site should facilitate faster intervention.

“The new location is strategically very favourably situated,”

says mayor Dirk De fauw (CD&V).

“The barracks will have a direct connection to the Bevrijdingslaan in the direction of the centre, and the other direction will not be a problem either.”

The majority of interventions begin at the little outpost on the Walweinstraat in Belgium because the main post’s current position along the Pathoekweg is not ideal.

That issue ought to be resolved by the striking new seven-story structure.

“Moreover, this will be the beating heart of Emergency Zone 1. The administrative services that are currently still located in Oostkamp, will also move to the new barracks in Bruges.”

The construction can begin in September if all goes as planned. Everything should be completed in less than three years. About 30 million euros are spent on the project.

How will the new fire station improve emergency response times in Bruges?

Because of its advantageous location next to the ring road, which allows for faster access to different sections of the city and neighboring areas, the new fire station in Bruges is anticipated to enhance emergency response times.

Because of its close proximity to a major thoroughfare, emergency vehicles and fire engines can get to the scene more quickly.

Furthermore, the station’s layout and architecture have been thoughtfully considered to maximize operating effectiveness and facilitate a seamless intervention flow.

The new location will facilitate improved coordination and resource deployment by acting as the administrative hub of the emergency response zone and the main base of operations for the Bruges region.
