Mechelen (Brussels Morning Newspaper): Ecopower plans a 230m wind turbine in Mechelen-Noord, producing 11M kWh and cutting 4,000 tons of CO2 yearly. Information events will be on January 22 & 28.

Ecopower has been a renewable energy cooperative since more than three decades ago, and the funds from its projects came from citizen’s investments. Recently, they agreed to build the wind turbine to be installed near the Vrouwvliet pumping station that is located near Mechelen-Noord on Flemish Environment grounds. The permits for this have already been sent. This initiative is part of Eco power’s mission to support sustainable energy production, continuing their work on renewable energy projects in the region

What are the details of the Ecopower wind turbine project in Mechelen-Noord?

According to Kobe Verbeke from Ecopower, the new wind turbine will produce more than 11 million kWh of energy and cut down CO2 emissions by 4,000 tons every year, which is enough to power 5,500 homes. Since residents fully own the turbine, the benefits will stay in the community. Climate councillor Arthur Orlians pointed out that this project helps the environment and reduces reliance on outside energy sources, allowing people in Mechelen to invest in green energy. The site in Mechelen-Noord meets all the needed requirements, and residents can find out more at two information events.

The wind turbine is good for at least 11 million kWh and a CO2 reduction of 4,000 tons per year. That is enough green energy for 5,500 households

Ecopower is organising meetings to share information about a new wind turbine. These will happen on January 22 at the Battel community centre and on January 28 at the Keldermanszaal in the town hall, both from 4 to 8 pm. People can ask questions and learn how to become co-owners of the turbine to use its energy at home. The turbine will be 230 meters tall, much taller than the local water tower and almost two and a half times the height of the Sint-Romboutstoren. There will also be a public inquiry from January 10 to February 9.

Steps for the Mechelen-Noord wind turbine project

The process of getting permission for the wind turbine involves several key steps. These include an environmental impact assessment, public consultation, and compliance with local regulations. Authorities will then review the application to ensure that the project is environmentally, technically, and legally sound. Upon passing this review, Ecopower can then start construction. This initiative forms part of the wider effort to encourage renewable energy production and minimise fossil fuel consumption within Flanders, as communities around these sites invest directly into them. The Flemish Government, with other stakeholders on the local front, will, of course, monitor the progress of the project.
