Tessenderlo-Ham (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – Tessenderlo-Ham is developing sustainable cart paths for agricultural vehicles at Beekstraat Viooltjesstraat and Kapelstraat for agricultural vehicles with the purpose of protecting the local green areas. Alderman Karolien Eens has confirmed that this €8 million project will be finished by 2026, during which more than 200 trees will be planted.

Tessenderlo-Ham has initiated the construction of innovative cart tracks to accommodate heavy agricultural vehicles while preserving the natural environment. The project involves transforming parts of Beekstraat, Viooltjesstraat, and Kapelstraat into specialised tracks designed for agricultural use.

These tracks consist of two concrete lanes with a central strip that allows grass to grow, ensuring a balance between functionality and ecological preservation. Local reports from Het Belang van Limburg confirmed the development, which aims to enhance the infrastructure for farming activities in the area.

Alderman for Mobility Karolien Eens highlighted the dual focus of the project, stating,

“The cart tracks provide a solid surface to drive on, and that is the most important thing for farmers.

According to Alderman Karolien Eens,

We have also opted for sustainable materials that are water-permeable so that rain can still seep in. In this way, we limit the risk of flooding due to paving and we opt for biodiversity.

The project also includes planting over 200 trees as part of its commitment to environmental sustainability. An information session was held for local residents and farmers, during which feedback was overwhelmingly positive.

Evans remarked,

“They appreciate that the green character of the region is preserved and the practical advantages of the cart tracks.”

The initiative uses sustainable water-permeable materials that minimise flood threats through water drainage into the soil. Over 200 new trees will be established as part of the initiative to increase biodiversity. Local residents, together with farmers, express appreciation for the project because it delivers both environmental advantages and practical benefits.

The project requires an €8 million investment that includes Flemish government subsidies as part of a larger sewerage initiative and will finish construction operations in 2026.

Why is This Project Significant?

The geographic location of Tessenderlo-Ham exists within an area that depends heavily on agriculture to sustain local economies and inhabitants. Modern agricultural infrastructure development combined with environmental protection aims underlie the implementation of cart tracks. Such projects are vital for Limburg because there is an urgent need to maintain agricultural activities while respecting ecological needs. Planting more than 200 trees supports worldwide efforts that stress the improvement of biodiversity in the development of rural areas.

Tessenderlo Group stands as a leader in Belgium for promoting sustainable agricultural practices throughout the past several years. The company utilises two main environmental strategies, which involve turning production waste into agricultural nutrients and implementing precise water and fertiliser distribution techniques.

The proven techniques achieve both water conservation and the reduction of nutrient contamination in water streams. Multiple international initiatives focus on resolving population-related food production issues, which will rise to nearly 10 billion people by 2050 through sustainable resource management.
