Driverless Train Adventure in Mechelen

Mechelen (Brussels Morning) – Two driverless trains left Mechelen station, unnoticed by most passengers. A brave traveler pulled the emergency brake, ensuring everyone’s safety.

In Mechelen, something happened with 2 trains. They left the station without a driver. It happened after they were supposed to be separated. Most passengers didn’t even realize it. One  traveler had to pull the emergency brake. After 1.5 hours everyone was safely evacuated and no one got hurt. The trains stopped just outside the station.

Passenger’s Response to a Red Light Emergency

Jeroen De Wachter was on one of the passenger. He noticed something weird  the train was moving but it felt like the engine wasn’t running. Then a passenger mentioned that they thought the driver was still on the platform. Jeroen went to check the driver’s cabin but no one answered when he knocked on the door.

Jeroen realized something was off when the train stopped then started rolling backward. When he saw a red light approaching he knew things were going wrong and pulled the emergency brake. Everyone stayed calm most passengers didn’t even notice. After a while they were finally able to leave the train.

It took a while before they could get off the train. No one called them back after someone contacted the NMBS. Eventually a person in a fluorescent vest showed up near the train and after a bit they opened the doors. They were then guided back to the station by walking along the tracks. They even got water and cookies. After a little adventure they made it back to the station two hours late. Train traffic was stopped until around 1 p.m. The NMBS is still figuring out what happened.
