Deerlijk (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – Miranda Demeulemester leads a shelter project where children build a pirate-themed boat. She and her husband, Kristof, crafted the base, fostering creativity and teamwork among kids during Pirate Week.

Miranda Demeulemester runs the shelter. She said the idea for the project came from their theme this week, which is “pirates.” They decided to build a boat. To make this happen, Miranda and her husband, Kristof, did most of the building at home.

They mentioned that they made sure the base of the boat was strong and well-made before taking it to the school. Once the base was ready, they brought it to the shelter. The children were excited to help finish the boat.

“This week we are working on the theme of ‘pirates’ in the shelter. That’s where the idea came from to make a boat ourselves,”

Says Miranda Demeulemester.

How are Deerlijk kids enjoying their pirate boat adventure?

At the school, the children helped finish the boat by adding their ideas. They built the mast together and painted the sail with bright designs. The project included making pirate items like hats and binoculars. They mentioned that the hands-on work lets them be creative and learn teamwork. The boat was more than just a craft. It brought excitement and adventure to their pirate week at the shelter.

The children are very excited about their new pirate boat. Every day, they hurry over to play and jump inside. They grab the homemade binoculars from the boat and shout, “Land in sight!” They pretend to be brave pirates exploring new places. The boat has become the centre of their playtime. Kids take turns being the captain, the lookout, or part of the crew.

“The kids love it. They come, jump in the boat, grab the homemade binoculars that are in it and shout ‘Land in sight!’

Says Miranda Demeulemester.

According to the officials, there are some worries about how long the boat, made from egg cartons, will last with all the play. The children are careful with it right now. They want to keep it safe for as long as they can. They mentioned that the boat is strong, even though it is made of fragile materials. It has survived a few falls and bumps.
