De Lin Worker Attacked While Trying to Calm Bus Station Fight in Ghent-Sint-Pieters

Ghent (Brussels Morning) – A fight broke out at the Ghent Sint-Pieters bus station where a De Lin worker trying to intervene was attacked and injured. Police quickly arrested two suspects at the scene and three more later at Blaarmeersen.

On 27 June 2024 at 12:30 PM there was a fight at the bus stop in Ghent-Sint-Pieters on a bus going to Blaarmeersen. A worker from De Lijn tried to stop the fight but things got worse and the worker was attacked by the people fighting. The worker got hurt but not too badly. He needed to see a doctor so they took him to the hospital for help. The police acted fast after the fight. They caught two suspects at the bus stop right after the incident. Later on they found three more people involved at the Blaarmeersen recreational area. The police are still looking into why the fight happened and what led to it.

What Happened When a De Lin Supervisor Tried to Intervene in a Bus Station Fight in Gent-Sint-Pieters?

Frederick Wittock from De Lijn, the transport company said they have a supervisor who helps things go well on busy days. It has been said that the supervisor is important especially when there are lots of passengers at the bus station. The supervisor’s job is to handle the crowds help passengers and make sure buses leave and arrive on time. On the day of the problem the supervisor was doing his job when he saw the fight starting on the bus going to Blaarmeersen. He knew it was crucial to keep things calm and safe so he stepped in right away to try to make things better. But the people fighting didn’t stop. They attacked the supervisor instead. Wittock said De Lijn cares a lot about keeping its staff and passengers safe. The company is working closely with the police to understand what happened and is looking at ways to stop this from happening again. The supervisor even though he got hurt,is going to get better soon and is getting all the help he needs from De Lijn.

The police spokesperson Matto Langeraert shared that they caught two people at the bus stop after the fight. The police officers got there quickly and made these arrests right after the incident happened. Langeraert added that the police didn’t stop with those two arrests. They kept working to find and catch everyone else in the fight. “After a while we found three more people,” he mentioned. These extra suspects were found at the Blaarmeersen park where many bus passengers go. The police linked these people to the first problem by talking to witnesses and maybe checking camera recordings. With the police working togethe, they caught all five suspects helping to understand why the fight happened. The police spokesperson promised that they are looking into everything carefully to make sure everyone is safe and treated fairly.
