Ghent (Brussels Morning Newspaper): On July 21, 2023, in Ghent, a fight led to Hans Van De Wal suffering a brain injury and coma after being pushed and hit. Two individuals face charges of assault and battery, with community service proposed. The court’s decision is set for December 13.

On July 21, 2023, a fight happened between two couples on Onderstraat in Ghent. One man pushed another and then hit him, making the victim fall and hit his head. He ended up with a brain injury and went into a coma, not remembering anything. The police later asked for help finding the couple, and they quickly came to talk to the police.

Will the court hold defendants accountable for the Ghent assault before December 13?

The public prosecutor wants community service for two people involved in a fight. They are charged with assault battery, and negligence. The man’s girlfriend is also facing charges for injuring the other girlfriend. Both defendants say they acted in self-defense because the victim was pushed first. The man is willing to do community service if found guilty, but his girlfriend disagrees. If she is not found guilty, the judge may have to give her a prison sentence instead.

The lawyer for Hans Van De Wal says he is still not well and can’t work. He has a long way to go to recover and is seeing doctors. He mentioned that Hans didn’t go to court because it might be too dangerous for his health, stress could make him sick again. He had part of his skull removed during treatment. The lawyer said the family doesn’t care much about what happens to the defendants. They want the court to recognize Hans’s suffering and hold the defendants responsible. The defendants are blaming Hans, which hurts him a lot. The court will make its decision on December 13.
