Ghent (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – In Ghent, the copper IUD (emergency coil) is 99% effective within 5 days, offers 5–10 years of contraception, and costs up to €150 (free under 25). Vzw Luna’s Carine Vrancken promotes better access via a new website.
As VRT News reported, the copper IUD, also known as the emergency coil, is a highly effective form of emergency contraception that can be used up to 5 days after having unprotected sex, improved in Ghent. They mentioned that it works better than emergency contraceptive pills, with over 99% effectiveness when inserted within this timeframe.
According to officials, besides being used right away, the emergency coil also works as a long-term birth control method. It can stay in place for five to ten years, depending on the type. Women get both emergency contraception and ongoing pregnancy prevention without needing more hormonal methods. However, in the past, many women faced issues like long waits and a lack of clear information, which made it harder to get this effective method.
“The problem with the emergency pill is that it only works if ovulation has not yet occurred. Women feel more like having sex after such an ovulation. It is a trap of nature. We see that every year women still get pregnant unintentionally, despite using a morning-after pill,” says Carine Vrancken of vzw Luna. This is the organisation behind 4 abortion centres in Flanders and Brussels.
How does the new website improve access to copper IUDs for women?
A new initiative has launched a user-friendly website to support women in accessing emergency contraception. The website provides comprehensive information about the emergency coil, also known as the copper IUD, and allows women to schedule appointments directly, eliminating previous barriers and empowering them to manage their reproductive health without delays.
While women over 25 are responsible for the cost of the coil and its insertion, which can be up to 150 euros, those under 25 benefit from nearly full reimbursement, reducing financial burdens for this age group.
Officials mentioned that this makes the emergency coil a cost-effective and convenient option, offering both immediate emergency protection and long-term birth control due to its ability to remain effective for several years after insertion.
Vzw Luna, a women’s health organisation, is working to ensure women have all the information they need about intrauterine devices (IUDs). They focus on providing clear details because the procedure of inserting an IUD can be painful for some. They mentioned that a key goal is to debunk common myths, particularly the misconception that IUDs are not suitable for younger women.
According to Vzw Luna, by offering accurate information, Vzw Luna supports women in making informed choices about their contraception, empowering them to select the option that best fits their individual needs and circumstances. This approach not only improves access to effective birth control methods but also helps women understand what to anticipate during the procedure, including potential discomfort, allowing them to prepare both mentally and physically.
