Wijnegem (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – During an incident in Wijnegem, a De Lijn bus collided with a car, injuring 4 people with minor wounds. The bus driver had multiple people injured alongside himself. The experts remain unable to establish what caused this incident.

A De Lijn bus crashed into a car near Wijnegem today, causing four people to sustain minor injuries, according to news broadcasts early this afternoon.

The collision injured the bus driver and one passenger, and both people inside the car. The accident took place at the Turnhoutsebaan (N12) and Jozef Nauwelaertsstraat intersection during afternoon hours at 3:15 PM. Emergency teams brought the entire party to AZ Monica Hospital for medical assessment. Operational teams are determining what triggered the accident.

A Wijnegem intersection became the site of a destructive accident, which interrupted operations for tram lines 5 and 10. De Lijn representative Marco Demerling states that the exact number of bus passengers remains unknown as a result of the accident.

Official personnel quickly removed debris from the collision location before normal traffic processes resumed. The accident resulted in no severe injuries, but medical checks were needed because of the collision damage.

What are the traffic accident trends in Wijnegem and the surrounding areas?

High public transport combined with vehicular activity makes Wijnegem in the Antwerp province one of the busiest transport centres. The Antwerp region experiences 5,000 traffic accidents yearly, based on Flemish government reports, while public transport vehicles operated by De Lijn make up approximately 15% of these accidents. Route N12, or Turnhoutsebaan, represents a prominent intersection where over 30% of all accidents occur in Wijnegem.

De Lijn data shows that its Antwerp bus routes suffer from 3 to 4 small accidents monthly, mostly resulting in light injuries. Statistics show that more than 40 transportation accidents occurred in the area during 2023, and severe injuries only amounted to 2% of the total incidents. The AZ Monica hospital treats around 200 victims of traffic collisions every year, and most patients receive outpatient care.

Traffic congestion, together with unexpected intersection braking, plays a role in causing numerous accidents. Wijnegem police records indicate that right-of-way mistakes and driver distractions continue to be responsible for most traffic accidents in the town.

Official results about this recent occurrence are still pending, yet show similarities with previous cases. Statistical records show that these types of accidents typically result in brief road disruptions since most impacted roads typically resume service in two hours or less.
