Genk (Brussels Morning Newspaper): A 15-year-old girl was killed by a De Lijn bus in Genk while crossing the road. Authorities are investigating, and legal action is pending against those sharing images on social media.

An accident happened on 24th October involving a bus from De Lijn on Europalaan near the train station in Genk. A 15-year-old girl was hit by the bus while trying to cross the road. Emergency services arrived quickly, but they could not save her. The girl died at the scene.

How will authorities address the sharing of graphic images?

The bus driver, who is very upset by what happened, is getting support and care to help deal with the emotional impact. The police temporarily closed off the area after the accident. A traffic expert was brought in by the Limburg public prosecutor’s office to investigate what happened. Pieter Strauven from the prosecutor’s office said, sharing pictures of this event is wrong. He added that such actions can hurt the victim’s family and friends and disrupt the investigation. The prosecutor’s office is serious about this and will take action against anyone involved in sharing these images.

Several people nearby took pictures of the victim under the bus and shared them on social media. The public prosecutor’s office plans to take legal action against them. Pieter Strauven said that this behavior is wrong and should not be allowed. The Carma police are trying to find out who these people are and will send a report to the prosecutor’s office. Sharing such images can lead to serious penalties, including 1 month to 2 years in prison and fines that could be as much as 2,000 euros, multiplied by 8.
