Brussels Summer Tourism: Promising Initial Results

The hotel sector is taking stock of the summer season in Brussels. The operators are reasonably satisfied, according to a first survey conducted on Tuesday by the Brussels Hotels Association (BHA).

Rodolphe Van Weyenbergh, secretary general of the BHA, says that the occupancy rate rose again in July thanks to the many major events. The occupancy rate reached 68.7 percent, which is 1.5 percent higher than a year earlier.

For the period from August 1 to August 27, the average occupancy rate was 60.6 percent, 2.5 percent lower than last year.

According to the secretary general, this decrease is due to the absence of the flower carpet on the Grand Place, the lack of large-scale events and changes in the calendar. For example, the 2023 Spa-Francorchamps Grand Prix was held on the last weekend of July, but last year the event was held at the end of August. “This confirms the importance of a recurring event policy,” he adds.

For September and October, the BHA is more optimistic, mainly due to the recovery in business tourism.
