Brussels (The Brussels Morning Newspaper): A man was killed, and his wife and son were injured during a break-in in Ixelles, Brussels, linked to a Grindr meeting setup. Authorities are investigating potential connections to previous homophobic attacks.

A gunshot fired during a break-in at an Amsterdam resident injured him (57), his partner (57) and also shot their child (22) down on Thursday morning. The son planned a meeting with someone he met via Grindr, an application for homosexuals but it turned out these were criminals using the same application to trace their victims. Just then, there came some guys who invaded their house demanding for cash. This way waking up the parents of the dude. Thus, using caution when encountering new people online is important.

Are grindr dating app meetups putting Brussels residents at risk?

‘We still have not been able to determine exactly what happened, or for that matter Who has just made such a thing happen,” the Brussels Public Prosecutor’s Office said in a statement. They are investigating this to see whether those singled out by the attacker and one of the victims may have met via a dating app. They will conduct an investigation to determine what happened. Grindr can be used anonymously, as users are not required to use their real names. They can feel assured about their privacy and safe from interference from the outside world. But on the other hand. He or she who is really behind a given profile is sometimes hard to make out because it is so easy to create a fake one. So it is important to be wary of talking to people on-line.

In late June, five people in Brussels were hurt in homophobic attacks after planning to meet someone from Grindr, as reported by Le Soir. Every time, it was a similar situation  the victims believed they were meeting someone for a date from the app, but instead, they were attacked and beaten up. It’s really important to be cautious when meeting people online. The police are still investigating if the shooting is connected to the earlier homophobic attacks in June. Rainbow House contacted Grindr for help, and now there’s a notification for Grindr users in Brussels.
