Bredene (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – The ‘Serving You’ care centre in Bredene, Belgium, was closes after operating without accreditation. Mayor Steve Vandenberghe ensured all 14 residents found proper care. The town took legal action against the owner.

The mayor of Bredene, province of West Flanders, Belgium, Steve Vandenberghe, is happy that all the people still living at the ‘Serving You’ care centre now have a new place to live. Some of them moved to a place where they get help with their daily life. Others, who need more special care because of health problems or mental health issues, moved to other places that can help them.

The town worked with social services and doctors to find the right place for everyone. The mayor said the most important thing was not just to find a place for the people to live, but to make sure they are comfortable and get the care they need.

Why did Bredene shut down the ‘Serving You’ care center?

Everyone living at the ‘Serving You’ care centre will be moved to a new place within a week, by the end of March 2025. Once the buildings are empty, the town of Bredene will close them for good. This is the end of a long fight between the town and the people who ran the care centre. The care centre refused to close even though the government told them to.

A care centre in Bredene called ‘Serving You’ was shut down in August 2024 because it was operating without proper accreditation. The government found serious problems, like not watching over the residents’ medicine properly. Many residents had mental health issues, and the government said the centre needed to close.

The centre’s owner didn’t want to close and kept residents there after the deadline. The government tried to get them to leave, but the owner didn’t listen. In January 2025, there were still people living there. The town of Bredene had to go to court to finally make the centre close.

In February 2025, the town of Bredene decided to close the ‘Serving You’ care centre for good. Before they closed it, they made sure the 14 people still living there had a place to go. The town worked with social services to find good places for everyone.

The town also filed a complaint against the centre’s owner for not following the rules and not taking care of the residents. The mayor said the town couldn’t let this happen and that the residents’ safety was the most important thing.
