Brazen thief targets elderly in Mechelen’s city center

Mechelen (The Brussels Morning newspaper): On 19July in Mechelen a thief on a blue racing bike stole two handbags injuring two elderly women. The bags were quickly recovered. Police are investigating and seeking public assistance to identify the suspect.

Last Friday on19 July between 11:00 and 12:30 some thefts happened in Mechelen‘s city center. The thief was bold and targeted people in places like Edgard Tinellaan, Keizerstraat and Maalderijstraatje. Elke Waters a police spokeswoman said the man was very bold. He would ride his bike up to people, grab their bags and then quickly ride away.

What led to the recent thefts and injuries in Mechelen?

During the thefts two old ladies one 81 and the other 87 got hurt and fell down. They were taken to the hospital. One lady had minor injuries and the other lady was hurt more but not in a life-threatening way. During the thefts a 28-year-old lady also fell but didn’t get hurt. The police are still looking into the thefts and the falls to figure out what happened.

Despite the thief being very bold he didn’t manage to steal anything valuable. He took two handbags but they were found soon after with everything still inside them. Elke Waters said the thief’s reasons were not clear because he didn’t take anything from the bags he stole. With help from the victims, witnesses and city cameras the police found a suspect fast. They are still investigating to understand why the thefts happened and what the suspect was up to.

The cops in Rivierenland are looking for a guy linked to some grab thefts. He was on a blue old racing bike with white handlebars an Eddy Merckx model. He was in dark shorts a white t-shirt and had a dark scarf covering his face and hair. The cops are asking everyone to help find the guy by sharing any information they have.
