Bonheiden (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – A fire on Zwarte Leeuwstraat, Bonheiden, Antwerp, claims 1 life, destroys 2 apartments, injures several, and displaces a family; investigation ongoing, local leaders offer support.

As HBVL and VRT News reported, a fire started late last night, on May 23, 2025, in an apartment building. The building is on Zwarte Leeuwstraat in Bonheiden, a municipality in the province of Antwerp, Belgium. 

1 person died in the fire, which was reported around 1 a.m. Emergency services arrived at the scene and were able to stop the fire quickly. The fire wrecked 2 apartments. A family’s apartment was badly damaged. They are now staying with relatives.

What caused the Bonheiden fire?

After the fire, several other people were taken to the hospital. This was done as a precaution, possibly because they inhaled smoke or had minor injuries. The municipality of Bonheiden offered their sympathies to the family and friends of the deceased. They also added that the fire department arrived on the scene very quickly and were able to put out the fire before it affected any other area of the building.

The cause of the fire is still unknown. The cause of a fire is one of the first things fire investigators look at and they are actively assessing everything in the structure in which the fire occurred, and officials are asking for patience while they find out more about the fire and the person’s death.

They plan to share more information when they have it. The families who are dealing with the fire are getting support. Local leaders have promised to help anyone who had to leave their homes because of the fire.
