Bierbeek (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – Bierbeek opened a new skate park at the Mevrouwkensveld social housing estate on October 1, 2025. The area includes a dog park, with plans for a playground, promoting outdoor activities for residents.
As VRT News reported, a new skate park has opened at the Mevrouwkensveld social housing estate in Bierbeek, in the province of Flemish Brabant, Belgium.
“The idea for this skate park came about during the pandemic,”
said Lisa Hermans (CD&V), Bierbeek’s Alderman for Sports.
“We wanted to focus on outdoor activities and give the community a place for young people to stay active.”
What impact will Bierbeek’s Mevrouwkensveld skate park have on youth and the Community?
The temporary pop-up skate park was established before the construction of the permanent park. Local skaters assisted with the testing of the ramps and features and provided input into the overall design. Officials hope that it can be a focal point for youth and promote outside activity in the community.
The interest in the skate park has led the municipality of Bierbeek to search a permanent location. The current park is part of a larger recreational area at the Mevrouwkensveld social housing estate. It includes a skate park and a dog park, and there are plans to add a playground in the future.
Alderman Lisa Hermans (CD&V) said the project is designed to benefit residents of all ages. The alderman called the project a success and highlighted its impact on the community.
“Seeing young people active and residents connecting makes me proud of everyone who helped make this happen,”
she said. Skaters also praised the new park. Sarah, a regular visitor, said,
“I used to have to go skating somewhere else with my brother. Now we have a place close to home, and that is really nice.”
The construction of the Mevrouwkensveld skateboard park in Bierbeek commenced in 2023 at the behest of our local youth. After a search for a location, the municipality found and approved the Mevrouwkensveld area in the municipal centre.
The municipal council approved the project with an estimated cost of around €120,000, including VAT. The project was subsequently approved after the typical construction phase, after construction was initiated. The skate park was officially opened on Wednesday, 01 October 2025.
