Brussels (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – A formal warning has been issued by Belgium to U.S. Ambassador Bill White that he must stop his attacks on Belgian authorities through social media or face escalating tensions diplomatically between the two allies. This comes in light of several inflammatory posts made by the diplomat on social media, most recently an artificial intelligence-generated photo lampooning the country’s health minister.
What triggered the diplomatic warning?
The immediate trigger was an Instagram story posted by Ambassador White on Friday, 28 August 2026, featuring an AI-generated image of Belgian Health Minister Frank Vandenbroucke.
The post carried the caption
“Damages every form of joy in life”
above the image, with White adding the line:
“Who’s the biggest LOSER in Belgium?”
The post was widely interpreted as a jab at Vandenbroucke’s new policy requiring all alcohol advertising to carry the warning
“Alcohol is harmful to health,”
a measure that has already sparked a domestic dispute with Belgian brewers.
The reaction of Belgian Foreign Minister, Maxime Prévot, was instant in that he deemed the appointment unacceptable and summoned the American ambassador to Belgium for an official reprimand. According to the BBC report, on Monday, 31st August, the two met for around 90 minutes in the Foreign Ministry where the Belgian official conveyed a clear message regarding further provocative acts by White.
How did Belgium frame its diplomatic stance?
Prévot framed the issue not as a policy disagreement over alcohol warnings, but as a breach of diplomatic etiquette and respect for Belgian sovereignty.
In his statement after the meeting, he said,
“Such statements from an ambassador accredited in Belgium cannot be tolerated.”
He added that
“it is unacceptable for an ambassador accredited in Belgium to target a member of our government in this way,”
underlining that ambassadors are expected to operate within well-established rules of mutual respect and non-interference.newsukraine.
The foreign minister stressed that diplomacy exists precisely to manage differences through proper channels, not through public social-media lectures.
“Countries may have differing opinions, sometimes fundamentally. Diplomacy exists precisely to discuss these differences openly and directly through the appropriate channels, not to publicly lecture each other or interfere in domestic political debates,”
Prévot said. He also drew a parallel with reciprocity, noting that the same principle would apply if a Belgian ambassador personally criticized U.S. officials inside the United States.
What is the alcohol policy dispute about?
The policy dispute underneath is related to the tightening of the Belgian government on laws on alcohol advertisement. In accordance with the new law, every commercial advertisement about alcoholic drinks should contain the slogan, “Alcohol is harmful to health.” The slogan is supposed to appear in the advertisement itself and, as reported, not in the package or label of the products.
Belgian breweries have been protesting against the slogan because they think that this slogan treats drinking moderately as if it was alcohol abuse, and a media dispute on the issue has been going on for a week. Ambassador White’s post has brought a national dispute to an international level by mocking the health minister who introduced the law.
Has this happened before with the same ambassador?
This is the second instance this year where the Embassy of the United States in Belgium has been asked to explain the behavior of Ambassador White on account of public statements he made against Belgian officials and institutions. In February, Prévot had called in Ambassador White when the latter made allegations against Belgium of being antisemitic and demanded that the Health Minister intervene in an investigation of ritual circumcision conducted by some Jewish religious leaders in Antwerp. White said that the investigation was “ridiculous” and called for Belgian authorities to do something about it, causing Belgium to accuse the ambassador of interfering with their internal and judicial affairs.
This created a trend where the ambassador used the platform of public statements to comment on sensitive domestic affairs, according to the Belgians. In July, another issue arose when Ambassador White made some very harsh statements about the controversial Antwerp figure Moshe Friedman in an interview to the weekly magazine Humo, following his complaint against US President Donald Trump. Since then, Friedman has filed a criminal case against the ambassador for making threats, extortion, defamation and harassment charges, set for October 2026.
