Beerzel (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – A 6-hectare corn maze in Beerzel, organised by the Kempens Landschap Foundation, celebrates its 8th edition, themed on the Ursuline Sisters’ Winter Garden, with support from Mayor Glenn Smets.

As VRT News reported, on Aug 9, 2025, a 6-hectare corn maze opened in Peredreef, Beerzel, near Putte, in the province of Antwerp, Belgium. It is the 8th edition organised by the Kempens Landschap Foundation. The maze follows a new theme every year. This year, it is based on the Ursuline Sisters’ Winter Garden.

Who is supporting this year’s corn maze in Beerzel?

Provincial Executive Member Jan De Haes, chairman of the Kempens Landschap Foundation, says the corn maze is designed as both a fun day out and a way to share local heritage. He says the aim is to show a hidden treasure in the province in a new and creative way.

The project is part of the foundation’s work to make historic sites open. According to officials, the Winter Garden has been restored and now offers tours and modern displays. The maze links art with nature.

“With the corn maze, we want to introduce people to a hidden gem in our province in an original way.”

The municipality of Putte is giving financial support for this year’s corn maze in Beerzel. Mayor Glenn Smets (CD&V) says the maze is a good way to show the strengths of the municipality. He explains that every year, schoolchildren from Putte and Beerzel can visit the maze at a lower price, so more young people can take part.

The corn maze will be open to visitors until September 28, 2025. In August 2025, it welcomes guests every day except Monday, from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. In September 2025, the maze opens only on weekends, from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. A special event will take place on September 26, with a late-night opening at 7:30 p.m. Visitors are advised to bring a flashlight for this evening.

How did the Beerzel corn maze become a local summer tradition?

The Beerzel corn maze was first created by the Kempens Landschap Foundation 8 years ago as part of its mission to combine nature, recreation, and heritage promotion. Each summer, the maze is designed around a different theme linked to the region’s cultural or historical assets.

Over the years, it has become a seasonal highlight for residents and tourists, supported by the municipality of Putte and promoted by local schools. This year’s theme was inspired by the Ursuline Sisters’ Winter Garden.

The Winter Garden was built around 1900 as part of an international boarding school. It is the largest Art Nouveau site in the region, open to the public. The building is known for its glass dome, detailed decoration and long history.
