Hasselt (The Brussels Morning newspaper): Herkenrode Abbey in Hasselt launched Beeldverbinding a project combining walking and photography to bring people together with 10 participants enjoying nature and sharing their artistic views.
On 28 July afternoon at the Gatehouse of Herkenrode Abbey in Hasselt they started Beeldverbinding a new project to bring people together through walking and taking pictures. Around 10 people came for the first event where families, friends, and individuals can enjoy nature while snapping photos. It has been said that it’s a fun way to be outside and show your creativity by capturing the beauty around you. This program lets people explore nature and share their artistic views through photography. Beeldverbinding wants people to enjoy and take pictures of nature, helping them feel more connected to the world around them. It’s not just about being active but also about making friends by sharing your photo adventures. By mixing exercise and art they hope to create a friendly vibe where people can connect over their shared passion for nature and photography.
What inspired Tim Prys to launch Beeldverbinding in Hasselt?
Tim Prys the person who came up with the idea, shared, “I love walking, but I often find myself alone at home. I wanted to meet new people and connect walkers in nature. I hoped for around 5 participants so the turnout has exceeded my expectations.” The walk began with a visit to the Herb and Inspiration Garden at Herkenrode Abbey offering plenty of photo opportunities across its 2-hectare garden. The focus is on using smartphones for photography rather than professional cameras.
Prys mentioned “People love snapping pics on nature walks, so combining walking and photography was a natural fit. Nowadays everyone has a smartphone and enjoys sharing their best shots on social media. It also strengthens the walking group by creating a shared interest.” Marleen and Bea added, “We’re all in on the idea. We’ve been walking and taking photos together for years. Photography helps us notice details we wouldn’t otherwise see. We used to use fancy gea, but now we stick to smartphone photography for its spontaneity and ease in capturing everyday moments.” After a 5-kilometer walk the group gathered in the horse stables of the Abbey for a drink. They shared their photos, experiences and strengthened their new friendships.
Sofie shared, “Meeting new people with similar interests is exciting. Others help you notice more of nature and the surroundings, as there are always things you might miss when walking alone.” Beeldverbinding plans to hold the event monthly with participants choosing the next location themselves.
