Knokke-Heist (Brussels Morning Newspaper): Jean-François Fourtou’s artwork in Knokke-Heist, from the 2018 Beaufort triennial, will be removed by January due to deterioration.

French artist Jean-François Fourtou’s work is being taken off in Knokke-Heist at the end of January for poor condition, installed in the last edition of Beaufort Triennial 2018. According to the local official with responsibilities on matters of culture and heritage, Yves Merlevede, the wooded parts in it are so rotted. Four years ago, after the study of the structure, there was a plan to renovate the piece, but deterioration has increased, so restoration is no longer possible.

What challenges did Knokke-Heist face in maintaining Beach Castle?

It has been said that the decision to remove this artwork shows how challenging it is to keep outdoor installations in good condition after years of weather exposure. This work now symbolises the problems that public art faces. As Knokke-Heist is set to bid farewell to this iconic work, it also raises questions about how to create outdoor art that is both spectacular and sustainable.

The artwork by Jean-François Fourtou has suffered serious damage from weather exposure over the years. Its position in a square surrounded by grass and trees made it difficult to protect it from moisture. As a result, the wooden parts have deteriorated beyond repair, and the cost to restore them is now too high.

Iaurice Lippensplein will still be important to the town in the future, especially as a welcoming point for drivers. Alderman Yves Merlevede noted how special the square is and the need to keep its artistic feel. Plans are being made to replace the artwork that was taken down with a new piece that will enhance the area and serve as a friendly entrance. The town is looking for ideas for this new project, ensuring that the square continues to be a lively cultural and visual highlight in Knokke-Heist.
