Antwerp (Brussels Morning Newspaper): A survey by the Antwerp University and Colleges Association (AUHA) with 2,753 students revealed increased library visits post-pandemic, with nearly 40% visiting weekly for 2-3 hours. Rik Van Dale noted students desire longer hours and more group study rooms.

The Antwerp University and Colleges Association (AUHA) was surveyed to understand how students use libraries. 2,753 students participated, sharing their experiences and showing how their library habits have changed.

How are Antwerp students changing library habits post-pandemic?

The survey found that students are spending more time in the library during each visit as compared to 2019. This increase may be due to a desire for in-person study sessions or quiet spaces to focus. It could also reflect changes in study habits or the library’s appeal for group work. The results will help the Antwerp University and Colleges Association improve library services.

Nearly 40% of students visit the library each week, with most spending around 2 to 3 hours there, an increase from just 1 to 2 hours five years ago. Rik Van Dale from UA explained that before the pandemic, there were often long lines at libraries. Many students turned to studying at home during the pandemic and have continued that habit. However, those who do visit the library now stay longer. Students are also requesting longer opening hours and more group study rooms, and efforts are being made to accommodate these needs.

There are plans to keep the learning center at Campus Middelheim open until 9:30 p.m. instead of 7 p.m. At Campus Drie Eiken, they want to redesign the library so students can enter on their own using an app or their student cards, but that will take a few years. For now, both the university and colleges have apps that let students book a spot in the library. Most students go there to study, use equipment like 3D printers, and borrow books, while some also like to relax and go online.
