Antwerp (Brussels Morning Newspaper): In June 2023, a new bus lane opened on the A12 for company buses to the Port of Antwerp, reducing commute times by 10-20 minutes. Philippe Heyvaert from Voka Antwerp-Waasland reports positive feedback from workers.

In June 2023, a new bus lane was opened on the A12 motorway from Bergen op Zoom to Antwerp. This lane is for company buses to the Port of Antwerp and helps them avoid traffic jams during busy hours. The aim is to make travel easier for workers commuting to and from the port by providing a faster route.

What are the benefits of the new A12 bus lane for Antwerp commuters?

A recent review of the new bus lane shows good results. Company buses are passing through traffic easily, helping workers to arrive at the port on time. This bus lane has made commuting better and  have reduced traffic in the regular lanes of the A12. This project is part of a bigger plan by AWV and Lantis to improve travel in the area, especially through the Oosterweel project, which aims to improve traffic and support sustainable development around Antwerp.

Employees using company buses are saving 10 to 20 minutes on their daily commute, according to Philippe Heyvaert of Voka Antwerp-Waasland. Workers and employers give positive feedback, saying the buses are safer and more enjoyable since they can read during the ride. This shared transport helps reduce stress and enhance travel habits, handling about 630,000 trips a year in the port area. The bus lane has a speed limit of 50 kilometers per hour and operates from 5 a.m. to 12 p.m. There are also pilot projects in place to improve this transport system further.
