Antwerp (Brussels Morning) – Phones stored in secure lockers with magnetic releases at school to prevent conflicts. Students have mixed feelings some support it for cyberbullying others find it unnecessary.

The mobile phone lockers at the school are equipped with covers that lock similarly to the security tags in clothing stores. To open these covers a magnetic release is used. This advanced technology allows students to have their phones with them throughout the day avoiding the common issue of disputes that arise when phones are stored in a shared box. Michel Crins a teacher from the Netherlands emphasized the school’s deliberate choice of this clear system to ensure the safety of students’ phones and to prevent any potential conflicts or misunderstandings.

Antwerp Students’ Diverse Views on Phone Lockers

Roisin a student expressed some mixed feelings about the new system. She mentioned that it’s a good measure against cyberbullying but feels it’s a shame that they can no longer check between lessons to see if there’s a class in another room. The school communicates with them via smartphones. Roisin can understand why some might strongly oppose it but she believes that over time everyone will accept it and it will become a normal part of their routine rather than a source of frustration.

Nathaniel doesn’t like the idea at all. He thinks it’s unnecessary and suggests just hanging a bag on the door for phones. He’s worried about emergencies and none of his friends are on board with the idea. On the other hand Michiel believes it’s a bold move to tackle cyberbullying and maintain focus in school. He thinks it’s the school’s responsibility to provide a phone-free environment for students’ well-being. The school hopes this change will encourage more student interaction. Hanne finds it amusing and feels fine without her phone when with friends at school. She jokes that being around friends is all you need.
