Antwerp (Brussels Morning Newspaper) The installation of a new bridge across the A12 will lead to major traffic disruptions on the Antwerp Ring Road from Saturday, January 27, through the weekend. The traffic will be delayed due to construction alongside bridge installation work at the infrastructure site. The installation represents one element of a wider scheme that seeks to enhance traffic safety while addressing congestion problems in the region.

Road delays in Antwerp Ring Road are expected as crews work to install bridges above the A12, which will impact various travel paths. Car and truck operators should consider alternate routes to their destinations because authorities have warned them to plan ahead and account for longer travel durations. The bridge installation represents a fundamental aspect of the current A12 redesign project to tackle various dangerous intersections that produce daily traffic congestion.

This road safety improvement project receives top priority from the AWV to benefit pedestrians and cyclists together with other road users. Steps for providing alternate traffic routes will be clearly displayed, and personnel from traffic management teams will direct drivers throughout the building period. This project aims to develop a modern transportation network that can handle Antwerp’s increasing vehicle traffic levels.

The ongoing work includes both bridge deployment and the development of a ring road bypass route. An alternate transportation path will function during peak times to reduce main road congestion.

What are the ongoing infrastructure developments in Antwerp?

Lantis will build a new construction bridge spanning the A12 during the closure period. The bridge operates as one structure from the extensive construction roadway system dedicated to truck usage in the Oosterweel connection development project.

The A12 bridge constructed for construction use links the TOP Temporary Storage Area at the Antwerp-Noord junction to sites that extend along the Antwerp ring road. With its constructed network Lantis successfully reroutes construction traffic away from Antwerp’s existing heavily congested roads.

  • Oosterweel Connection: The Oosterweelknoop construction work continues to build a link between Antwerp City and Antwerp Port. The project integrates bicycle tunnels along with a paperclip-shaped viaduct design.
  • Ring Road Enhancements: Projects to enhance the Antwerp Ring Road (R1) focus on congestion reduction by developing a more effective traffic management system while performing extensive modernisation work. The project will build new flyovers and establish advanced traffic intersections as part of its work.
  • Port Accessibility: The Port of Antwerp-Bruges is undergoing persistent road maintenance to build better access for vehicles and cyclists, which maintains free movement while people experience temporary disruptions.
