Anderlecht (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – An armed individual escaped from law enforcement personnel when they encountered each other at the Clemenceau metro station. Charts by HLN confirmed this incident with our editorial staff.
An armed man ran away from officers at the Clemenceau metro station in Anderlecht while police were working Tuesday night. The incident took place at exactly 10 p.m. as the suspect stepped out of a vehicle holding a long weapon. When police patrols appeared, the suspect ran away from the location immediately. The authorities continue to search for the wanted individual.
“It was a person who was behaving suspiciously and had a long weapon with him,”
Says Sarah Frederickx of the Brussels-South police zone.
“When he saw the police, he immediately fled.”
Minister of the Interior Bernard Quintin (MR) briefly mentioned the incident in the committee.
“It shows the importance of the police presence in our streets,” he said.
Why has Clemenceau Metro Station become a Hotspot for Criminal Activity?
The Clemenceau metro station experienced rapid growth of criminal behaviour when multiple violent attacks occurred within nearby locations. Two shootings took place at this station less than one week apart. The first victim received serious leg injuries when a man fired a weapon.
One person died from the incident that took place at Peterbos in Anderlecht.
The shooting incidents stem from a drug gang rivalry that persists within Anderlecht. Gang-related violence and drug trafficking have increased together as primary causes of escalating crime in the area. The string of recent attacks demands more law enforcement personnel as well as stronger measures to eliminate violence at its source.
Local reporting indicates that the Brussels-South police zone has stepped up its fight against local criminal activities. New police forces maintain random patrols throughout neighbourhoods that show major crime increases near the Clemenceau metro station area. Police departments have boosted surveillance measures while maintaining partnerships with local authorities to arrest offenders who carry out crimes.
