Europe (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – President Zelensky stopped in Canada, met PM Mark Carney, joined EU/NATO calls, discussed 20-point plan before meeting Trump in Florida, amid Russian missile attacks on Kyiv.
As Barron’s News reported, President Volodymyr Zelensky stopped in Canada while on his way to Florida to meet U.S. President Donald Trump. During his stopover, he met with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.
He also joined a video call with leaders from the European Union and NATO. They discussed Ukraine’s war strategy and the need to defend the country’s sovereignty. Zelensky said they covered around 20 main points. These included security issues, territorial concerns, and financial support.
What is Zelensky discussing with Trump as Russia strikes Kyiv?
The talks came just hours after Russia carried out a large attack on Kyiv. Russian drones and missiles hit energy stations and residential areas. The strikes caused power outages and several casualties. Many people in the capital faced difficult conditions in freezing winter weather.
Ukrainian officials said the attacks showed Russia is not serious about peace talks. In response, Canada pledged more financial aid to Ukraine. European partners repeated their commitment to support Ukraine with both military and economic assistance during the ongoing war.
Zelensky is set to meet President Trump at Mar‑a‑Lago in Florida to discuss a 20-point peace plan. The plan was developed by Ukrainian and U.S. officials. It aims to guide future negotiations to end the war.
Key points include security guarantees, rebuilding support, and handling territories under Russian control. The situation of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant is also a major concern. While much of the plan is agreed upon, disagreements remain over territory. Russia has not accepted the proposals.
In the year 2014, war broke out between Ukraine and Russia when Russia annexed Crimea and supported Eastern Ukraine’s separatists. On February 24, 2022, Russia launched an extensive military invasion into Ukraine, attacking major cities including Kyiv. Since then, Ukraine has endured countless missile and drone strikes on its territory.
The Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant is currently occupied by Russia, which took control of the reactor plant in March 2022, raising considerable safety concerns regarding nuclear energy. Western countries and allies have provided extensive military and financial assistance to Ukraine.
