Berlare (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – A 3-car crash in Uitbergen, Berlare, caused a woman’s car to fall into the Scheldt. 2 men rescued her; all 3 suffered hypothermia. 4 hospitalised. Cause under investigation; car still in the river.

As VRT News reported, a serious traffic accident took place this afternoon, Nov 28, 2025, on the bridge in Uitbergen, Berlare, in the province of East Flanders, Belgium. 3 cars were involved in the crash. It started when 2 vehicles collided on the bridge. The impact caused a 3rd car, driven by a woman, to lose control. Her car broke through the bridge’s safety railing and fell into the water below.

The other 2 vehicles were heavily damaged. Debris from the collision was scattered across the road. Police, firefighters, and medical teams arrived at the scene quickly. They secured the area and began rescue operations. Authorities have opened an investigation to determine the cause of the crash. They are examining factors such as road conditions, driver behaviour, and speed.

What happened when a woman’s car plunged into the Scheldt in Uitbergen?

2 men in one of the cars involved in the accident acted immediately when they saw a vehicle sinking into the water. They jumped into the Scheldt River and followed the car as it went under. The men managed to pull the woman out before the vehicle fully submerged.

2 other people involved in the crash were also hospitalised. The cause of the accident remains unknown and is under investigation. The car that went into the river is still floating in the Scheldt. Firefighters responded quickly, but the high tide prevented divers from entering the water immediately. Rescue teams plan to continue later in the day when the tide drops.

In 2025, a car plunged into a canal in Bruges. A vehicle with 3 people on board drove through the barrier on a lift bridge and fell into the water. A grandfather and a child died after being rescued; another child survived.

Another case took place in 2025 in the province of Liège, where a car fell into the water near the Lanaye dam. One occupant escaped, while another was trapped for 40 minutes before rescue teams intervened.
