Hasselt (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – Infrabel is renovating Hasselt tracks under Sint-Truidersteenweg bridge for 9 days, part of €40M Master Plan; 700m track, 4 switches upgraded. Spokesperson Frédéric Petit highlights improved safety and capacity.

As VRT News reported, Infrabel has begun major work on the railway tracks under the Sint-Truidersteenweg bridge in Hasselt. The project will last 9 days and is part of the 4th phase of the €40 million Hasselt Master Plan. Workers will replace 700 meters of track, 4 switches, the overhead electrical line, and signalling equipment.

What are Infrabel’s latest Hasselt railway upgrades and travel impacts?

In April next year, Infrabel plans to renovate a section of track where trains park and are assembled.

“Hasselt is the hub of Limburg,”

explains Frédéric Petit, spokesperson for Infrabel.

“130 trains run daily on the interrupted railway lines between Hasselt and Tongeren, 55 of which are freight trains. 80 trains run daily towards Sint-Truiden.”

On an average day, 300 trains run throughout Limburg.

“Thanks to the work, trains can now run more smoothly to and from the platform area of Hasselt station,”

Petit continues.

“This area is a hub, and we want to avoid trains having to wait or get stuck in traffic. These works will improve rail traffic capacity.”

Railway work will disrupt train travel in southern Limburg during the week of November 11th. Officials mentioned that many people use the Sint-Truidersteenweg bridge at this time, and the maintenance will affect travel for commuters and leisure travellers.

Passengers will need to take replacement buses to Hasselt station until Sunday night, Nov 16, 2025. From Hasselt, travellers can continue their journey by train to Diest. Normal train service is set to resume on Monday morning, Nov 17, 2025.

In North Limburg and the Kempen region, train services will also be affected over the next 4 weekends. Between Hamont, Neerpelt, and Mol, passengers will face service interruptions and will need to use replacement buses. In Neerpelt, work will focus on replacing tracks and switches.

In the Kempen region, maintenance will take place on a bridge over the canal in Dessel-Kwaadmechelen. Travellers should check schedules in advance and expect changes to usual train services during these weekends.

Recent years have seen Limburg undertake similar railway projects. In 2024, the tracks on the Hasselt station side towards Diest underwent a complete renewal in terms of rails, switches, overhead lines, as well as the signalling installation.

In the last year, platforms and tracks inside Hasselt station were modernised to enhance the safety and accessibility levels. In other locations in Limburg, canals were crossed by bridges which were brought up to a better condition, and any worn tracks were renovated or completely replaced when work took place on weekends and at night.
