Leuven (Brussels Morning Morning) – Leuven-based Telraam won €15,000 at Barcelona’s Smart Deal contest, an international competition for young companies. CEO Kris Vanherle highlighted its counting frames, now in 40 countries with over 3,000 active traffic monitors.

As VRT News reported, Leuven-based startup Telraam has won €15,000 in an international competition for its smart digital solution. Telraam took part in the Smart Deal start-up contest in Barcelona, held over 2 days.

The event focuses on young companies that develop digital innovations for smart cities. The Smart Deal contest is part of a larger smart cities conference that attracted over 25,000 visitors from 140 countries.

How did Leuven’s Telraam gain international success with traffic-scanning technology?

Leuven company Telraam won 2nd place at the Smart Deal international competition. The firm presented its digital counting frames to a panel of global investors. Swiss company Irmos Technologies won 1st prize. Telraam received €15,000 from the €50,000 total prize fund to further develop the project.

“We are incredibly proud that, as a Leuven-based company, we have clearly gained international recognition at one of the world’s most prestigious trade fairs,”

says Kris Vanherle, CEO of Telraam.

Telraam’s counting frames were invented in Leuven and are now used in 40 countries. The system tracks traffic and pedestrian movement in real time. The company recently passed 3,000 active traffic counters.

In Leuven, Telraam has developed a small digital traffic device called an abacus that residents can place on street-facing windows. The device counts cars, bicycles, and pedestrians, and measures vehicle speeds. It sends the collected data automatically to residents, local authorities, and research groups. The information helps cities track traffic patterns, spot congestion, and plan safer streets.

Leuven-based startup Telraam was founded in 2015 to create smart traffic monitoring solutions. In 2017, it launched its first window-mounted counting frames, called abacuses. By 2020, the system was used in more than 20 countries.
