Zaventem (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – Zaventem will build a new sports complex with a swimming pool, supported by a €4.5 million Flemish subsidy over 30 years, Alderman Bart Dewandeleer confirmed; construction starts 2025–2026.
As VRT News reported, Zaventem, in the province of Flemish Brabant, Belgium, will receive €4.5 million in funding from the Flemish government to build a new public swimming pool. The money comes from a regional programme that supports 40 swimming pool projects across Flanders over the next 30 years. The subsidy for Zaventem will be paid out in annual instalments of €150,000.
What is Zaventem planning with €4.5M Flemish swimming pool funding?
Alderman Bart Dewandeleer (CD&V, team Bart) confirmed that the Flemish government will provide an annual subsidy to help fund the project.
“We are, of course, thrilled that we’re receiving an annual subsidy from the Flemish government for the construction of a new sports complex with a swimming pool,”
he said.
“This helps us keep it financially viable.”
The newly constructed facility will be built on Quinckenstraat, in Zaventem, with construction targeted to start no earlier than late 2025 or early 2026 to replace the current swimming pool, which has become too expensive to maintain and does not meet our standards of today in terms of energy and technical standards.
The municipality confirmed that the maintenance costs had sharply increased and that the current swimming pool facility was outdated. The new swimming pool facility will have modern energy efficient systems and be available to all residents of the municipality. The facility is planned to be designed for recreational swimmers as well as a sports club.
Plans for a new swimming pool in Zaventem have been in progress for several years. The current pool, built in the early 1970s, has served the town for more than 5 decades but is now too old and costly to maintain. Problems with energy use and repairs have increased since the 2010s, leading the municipality to consider a full replacement. In 2018, local officials began studying the best options for a new sports complex. After several reviews and budget discussions, the decision to build a new facility was confirmed in 2023.
