Limburg (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – This Friday, Oct 17, 2025, SAAMO urges Limburg residents to hang white sheets for World Day for the Eradication of Poverty. Lien Camps highlights awareness, solidarity, and long-term poverty solutions.

As VRT News reported, this Friday, October 17, 2025, the social organisation SAAMO is asking people in Limburg to take part in a campaign for the World Day for the Eradication of Poverty. Residents are invited to hang a white sheet from their windows.

Earlier today, Oct 15, 2025, Dusartplein in Hasselt hosted a special performance under the library’s awning. An aerial acrobat danced on white fabrics, capturing the attention of people passing by.

How is SAAMO in Limburg raising awareness for poverty on October 17?

Lien Camps of SAAMO said the white sheets carry an important message.

“We ask everyone to hang a white sheet, tied securely, from their windows on Friday. You can also do this at work, clubs, or other community places,”

she explained. SAAMO hopes the action will encourage conversations and remind the public that poverty is a shared concern.

The acrobat’s performance at Dusartplein in Hasselt had a clear message.

“She shows how people get caught up in poverty and how, together, through connection and solidarity, we can untie the knots,”

the organisation explained.

With this campaign, SAAMO is calling for structural solutions to poverty. The organisation wants to build public support to push policymakers to create long-term measures. SAAMO’s plan includes making sure everyone has an income above the European poverty line, giving equal access to education with clear scholarship information, increasing the number of social housing units, and preventing cuts to elderly care services.

The International Day for the Eradication of Poverty has been observed every year on October 17 since 1987, when over 100,000 people gathered at the Trocadéro in Paris to honour the victims of poverty, hunger, and violence.

In 1992, the United Nations officially recognised the day through Resolution 47/196. In 2025, the theme focused on ending social and institutional maltreatment and providing effective support for families living in poverty.
