Hoboken (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – Antwerp Mayor Els van Doesburg (N-VA) temporarily closed Jaffal Tea House and a pub on Antwerpsesteenweg, Hoboken, until November 5, 2025, after police found drugs, cash, illegal residents, and disturbances.
As GVA News reported, Antwerp Mayor Els van Doesburg (N-VA) has ordered the temporary closure of the Jaffal Tea House on Antwerpsesteenweg in Hoboken, in the province of Antwerp, Belgium, due to drug-related nuisance.
“In the owner’s apartment, police found drugs, packaging materials, and a precision scale. Cannabis was also found in the mailbox.”
David Cleiren, spokesperson for Mayor Els van Doesburg (N-VA).
Why did the Antwerp mayor close the Hoboken Tea House and pub over drugs?
The pub had long been known to police for operating a prohibited gaming machine and for hosting people living illegally on the premises. Because of these violations, the public prosecutor quickly sealed off the business to prevent further problems.
“The findings show serious indications that the establishment is serving as a base for drug use and sales,”
said the spokesperson.
“There is a persistent nuisance and a deterioration of public order and the quality of life in the immediate neighbourhood.”
The mayor has decided to suspend activities at the pub for 1 month. As the mayor’s spokesperson, David Cleiren comments, the intent for closure is to communicate to all patrons that the use and abuse of illegal drugs is unacceptable. This closure will end on Wednesday, November 5, 2025.
Police received calls on September 7, 2025, regarding disturbances at the cafe, and when officers arrived at the scene, they noted people were loudly congregating on the outdoor patio, and there was a strong odour of marijuana. Police also observed several scooter drivers temporarily park in front of the café before leaving.
On the raid of the tea house, police discovered extensive quantities of hashish and cannabis. The officers also found substantial amounts of cash secreted in various areas of the café. Officials stated that the discovery indicates potential involvement with drug trafficking.
Mayor Van Doesburg indicated that the closure is a precaution against the threat to public safety pending investigations. Authorities further stated that any company associated with drugs and public disorder will be subjected to stringent measures.
